THE REALM OF THE BANSHEE - WESTERN LORDAERON

A Social Study by Nekkr Shadowlust

Chapter IV - The Undercity

When first arriving the Undercity, the Ruins of Lordaeron Square are the first sign of the decay that has abated over the once prosperous capital city. The monuments that once adorned the ever busy square are now left to abandon, and the pathways are overun with rogue vegetation and vine that climbs over the stone walls, unchecked.

The throne room, where the infamous Patricide took place, was left untouched by the undead, and the blood of King Terenas can still be seen on the floor in front of the Throne. The Royal Grave stands as an ominous monument to whoever dares breaching into these hallowed grounds. The burial stone reads:

Here lies King Terenas Menethil II -- Last True King of Lordaeron.

Great were his deeds -- long was his reign -- unthinkable was his death.

"May the Father lie blameless for the deeds of the son.
May the bloodied crown stay lost and forgotten."

Great stone elevators lead the way into the depths of the capital of the dead. The stench of decomposition mixed with fine herbs and chemicals becomes more accute at this point, causing both nausea and terror to the unexpecting visitor. The atmosphere of the city is itself adverse to anything that breathes.

Historically, the Undercity was the criminals and such strats of society hideout, a sort of lower city where criminality and obscure business thrived, mostly due to the mazy nature of the crypts and mausoleums.

The center of the city serves as the Trade Quarter, and undead are seen busily taking care of their affairs. The silence in wich they do so is unsetting, and the wind that howls through the vast corridors disturbing. Around this trade quarter a circular tier balcony composed of several crypts serves as housing for the undead's activities. In the center, a grand storage bank leads the way into four separate canals that directs one into an outer tier, the main passage to the four quarters of the city, connected by a stream of toxic slime that adds an unique pestilence to the air.

The Warrior Quarter is where the bulk of military operations takes place, and the silence is broken by audible skirmishes and shouts of command. This is also where the Forsaken blacksmiths and armorsmiths work their craft with utmost expedience and discipline. A common factor through the whole of Fosaken society. It is not a coincidence that this Quarter is located close to the Apothecarium: Forsaken are ruthless in their strict training methods, and dismembered corpses are often seen making their way to the sooting necromantic halls of the Apothecarium.

The Magic Quarter is located in the northeastern parts of the Undercity. This is where the most arcane-inclined of the Forsaken come to research, learn new spells, and practice their arts, under the watchful eye of Bethor Iceshard. The Undead have taken great interest in recovering their casting abilities and this quarter is usually very populated, as most of the undead that dwelled in the arts of magic in their previous lives will continue to do so with even more dedication now that the mundane setbacks of life does not affect them.

The Rogue's Quarter is not an advisable place for the faint of heart. The shadiest of characters gather around this area of the capital: assassins, thiefs, rogues and the worst possible scum can be found in this very quarter, making it possibly the most hazardous place to visit. Whisperings and daggers being sharpened is a constant sound audible in this Quarter, aswell as screams of agony from possible torturing.

The Royal Quarter contains the Throne Room where Queen Sylvanas presides to the management of her people, as well as parlamenting with elven and orc ambassadors. This Quarter is heavily guarded by a permanent regiment of Royal Dreadguards, the Queen's personal guard. The architecture itself is meant to protect the Queen from possible attacks, as the only way to reach it is via a large tunnel riddled with guards. Visits past this point can only be made with previous arrangements.

Located in Undercity’s bottommost depths, the Apothecarium radiates evil and malice. Rickety tables are covered in bubbling, steaming potions, dripping candles and acrid beakers. Shelves hold weathered tomes, bizarre skulls and strange creatures suspended in jars of green liquid. Squealing, distorted experiments thrust tentacles, pincers and eyestalks out of iron cages, begging for release. This is perhaps the single most dangerous place in the whole of Azeroth, and besides the Kor'Kron's constant vigilance, there is no telling what the undead are up to down there.

Chapter V - The inhabitants

Upon closer inspection, one comes to notice that these undead, despite appearing like the mindless Scourge, have several distictive differences. The main being their gaze.
Their yellow gloing eyes carry a veiled threat, contrasting with the lost, mindless gaze of the Scourge, that only transmits brutalitality and savagery. The Forsaken's eyes reveal a cold, ruthless detachment to anything but their cause. Even when incured in wrath, the glow almost never loses its calculistic nature, as anger is often replaced with a deep sense of loathing and hatred.

Their speech is either blunt and painfully direct or perverse and intricate. Each word pondered and aimed at any weak point they see fit. Keep in mind that these are extremely calculistic and opportunist individuals. Having no sense of time and usually no other motivation but Revenge, they spend their time plotting and refining their ways to best serve the Queen.

The dark magics that originally animated the undead are unknown to this research, and it is a fact that the undead scourge minions were affected by the rotting and the decay of the flesh. Records from the Argent Crusade's scrollkeepers tell that the undead fiends would appear in a miriad of decomposition levels, from the blue skin fresh corpse to the heavily decomposed cadavers, even skeletons with full absence of flesh, depending on the time past between their demise and arisal.

The Forsaken have however refined the art of perserving their corpses. It is believed that the vast knowledge of chemistry and anathomy, combined with necromantic magics, allowed them to greatly delay the nocious bodily effects of undeath.

Chapter VI - Known Sects

Despite the Undead society not being particularly open to strangers, this research has been able to vaguely identify some of the main forsaken organisations. Let us debate them:

The Royal Apothecary Society
Composed of the finest scientists and researchers, the R.A.S. is believed to be the main Forsaken scientifical research organization. It is lead by Master Apothecary Faranell, a shady individual that can hardly ever be seen outside the Apothecarium. We assume the concotion of poisons and other sorts of vile chemicals is under the wing of the R.A.S., as only the finest of minds are allowed among it's ranks. Possibly the most well guarded sect of Forsaken, the apothecarions have spread their activities throughout Azeroth, and can be found sometimes as far as Northrend or Kalimdor. The meaning of this expansions is however, unknown.

The Deathguard
The Deathguard is the bulk of Forsaken military. And it is like no other military force ever seen. Despite their numbers not being great, these soldiers can witstand adversities and conditions no other militay unit can. Their movement is swift, as they require no rest, and their prowress in battle fierce, as they are fearless in the face of the enemy, fearing no pain or death. Usually silent individuals, the strict discipline in wich they were bred is visible in each and every single action they perform, being a simple weapon repair task or assaulting the enemy. Their superiors bare the title of Executors and supposedly answer only to an High Executor, whose identity is unknown to this study.

Cult of the Forgotten Shadow
This cult is the direct result of the raising an entire nation of Light wielders and worshippers. When faced with undeath and the fact that the Holy Light had abandoned them, these Forsaken turned to worship a new form of deity, the Forgotten Shadow, from wich they draw their powers. This is of course, a corrupted form of whorship, and the results are as vile as the undead who preach it.

The House of Sylvanas
Infamous in it's procedures, the Royal House Windrunner are often behind the most important decisions made in Forsaken society. Composed of both military and polithical personalities, it is believed that these have a great weight on the Queen's ponderings, acting in the shades as her councelors and advisors. Any member of this sect is trated with utmost respect in the capital city, wich notes their influence is deep and powerfull. More information can be found on Chapter III of this study.

The Shadowstalkers
These are perhaps one of the best kept secrets of the Undercity. Not many people outside Forsaken society can say they met a shadowstalker and lived to tell the tale. Their effectiveness is deadly. They leave no trail behind and are almost impossible to track. Obviously, this research will refrain from obtaining any more intel on this subject.

Author's note: After spending further time among the undead, i feel as if the life abandons me... i now understand better the struggle these cursed creatures endure, haunted by their past and hunted as monsters by numerous enemies. Some may call them pure evil, but mostly they are desperately fighting for survival and a place in a world that shuns them away. It's as tragic as it's sad. A sadness that can only be repayed with extreme violence and prejudice.
